Watercolor on paper, 2017
5″ x 7″
Julie Kwak studied fine art at a private high school and majored in it during her undergrad years. She is an artist currently managing an online Etsy shop and doing various art projects with different companies. She currently lives and works in Alexandria VA, in the DMV area not far from Washington, DC.
Her shop, PetalSalad, on Etsy was started with the idea that green plants and flowers of all kinds could be mixed and harmonized to create a beautiful blend like a salad. She wanted to emphasize that even a salad that we eat was once a beautiful plant.
She begins her paintings with an outline using Indian black ink and a dip pen. After the drawing has been completed, she moves onto watercolor.
Julie uses the dip pen to capture a design-like drawing all the while holding onto the fine-art feeling with watercolor. She combines the sharpness, neatness, and crispness of the dip pen style with the flowing, free strokes of watercolor painting. Even though dip pen was used, the black lines are almost invisible due to the watercolor gradation from black to other colors. Her goal is to make her paintings feel alive.
She hopes to create a unique style starting from the outlines to the fillings even to the structure and placement of the plants.
Julie also takes personal requests as well so if you have a plant or flower you like let me make a brand new blend for you.
